The White Obi is a beginner belt that indicates no progress. The white color represents innocence and purity. Every athlete starts with a White Obi.

The Yellow Obi is the very first obi that an athlete receives following an examination. It is designed to point out a student who has made some great initial progress in studying basketball. In all, the athlete is expected to study and develop the fundamental skills of basketball and unlearn any ideas or bad habits that he or she may have had or previously developed about basketball.

The Orange Obi is the second obi that an athlete receives following an examination. Along with continuing to develop better senses of coordination, balance and patience, athletes are required to demonstrate progress in learning more about their bodies in the game of basketball.

While athletes are expected to continue perfecting the fundamentals of basketball that they learned during their Orange Obi, training, new concepts, new skills, and new moves are introduced. At this level, athletes are expected to begin working more on their bodies, focusing specifically on strength, balance, coordination and speed. This is also the level where athletes learn how to better control his or her body and mind.

The advanced Blue Obi is the fourth obi that an athlete receives following an examination. At this level, athletes are expected to show significant progress in controlling their minds and bodies. This usually manifests itself in an athlete's unwillingness to compromise and a desire to continue intense training despite physical exhaustion. "Ibuki" (breathing) is also introduced.

It is used to highlight athletes who have begun to exhibit great potential to be able to advance their training and skills in the game of basketball. At this level, athletes are expected to show significant progress in their basketball skills in game situations.

This is the obi where athletes begin to truly find themselves. Athletes work with Black Obi athletes and observe their styles while performing much introspection. As a result, they may develop their own moves, combinations, and techniques that would later characterize them as a unique basketball player. It is the very last obi before the Elite Black Obi. An athlete is required to possess the Brown Obi for a minimum of 6 months and two complete competitive seasons before being able to attempt to receive an Elite Black Obi.
